Cam
I donât understand this feeling in my chest whenever she looks at me. Or the way my skin prickles when my hand touches her skin. Or why the fuck I melt into a puddle at her feet when she gushes about her daughter.
Get. It. Together. Asshole.
Iâve never given a fuck about anyone elseâs happiness besides my familyâs. But with her? Iâd do anything just to make her smile.
âThe Botanical Gardens?â She whirls around. âIâve always wanted to come to them. I figured the lights were taken down since Christmas is over.â
âThey keep it going till the end of January, apparently.â
I admire her taking in the lights. They are beautiful, no doubt. But not nearly as beautiful as her seeing them for the first time.
Thousands of twinkly lights span over the entire park. Over trees and on the bushes.
âI almost feel like Iâm home,â she whispers. âBesides that weâre walking in light sweatshirts, and at home, Iâd have full snow gear.â
The way she says home, I sense she misses New Hampshire. I guess I donât blame her. Georgia and New England are two entirely different places. Iâm sure itâs been a big adjustment.
As she walks ahead of me, she stops and looks up at the huge archway thatâs covered with lights.
I reach for her, holding her waist as I put my chin on her shoulder. âThanks for coming on this trip, gorgeous.â
Craning her neck slightly, she peers at me. âThanks for asking. Iâd probably be three or four cookies deep and FaceTiming my mother for the tenth time today to see Isla.â
âSweetheart, I know you said no hookups, but I really, really need to kiss you.â
âCam,â she says, barely whispering, âyou shouldnât kiss me. We shouldnât complicate things.â
Stepping back, I turn her to face me. Slowly backing her up into the darkness behind the archway, I press her chin up with my thumb. âYeah, Iâve told myself that for weeks. But you know what? Iâm done with that now.â Resting my other hand on the tree behind her, I dip my head closer to hers. âWhatâs the point in trying to stay away when all I want is you?â
She blinks. âCam, you donât mean thatââ
âI do though. I really do.â
âHow can you be so sure?â she says, challenging me. âHow do you know that, in a week or two, this wonât fizzle out? That you wonât lose interest?â
âBecause Iâve never given a fuck about anyone until you.â I move my hand to her cheek. âEver since you rocked my world our first night together, you havenât left my mind.â
Her eyes fill with tears. âYou donât understand. I canât take chances. My dad. Islaââ
âYour dad will get over it. And as for Isla, it doesnât scare me that youâre a mother. Not at all. Which actually scares the shit out of me.â
She stares up at me, the light hitting her tear-soaked cheeks. âIf this is a game, I donât want to play.â
âNot a game. Iâll prove it to you.â
I waste no time before kissing her hard.
